CHESS TOURNAMENT
The library’s 37th Annual Chess Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 6th. Players should report to the library at 10:30 AM and play will begin at 11:00 AM.
Competition will be held on three levels: the Junior Division for children up through 4th grade, the Senior Division for students in grades 5-8, and the High School Division for teens in grades 9-12. The top finishers in each age group will receive a trophy, and the winners in the Junior and Senior Divisions will go on to compete in the county-wide Chess Finals. Registration is required.
 
INVESTING PERSPECTIVES
Take charge of your financial future! Join us for a four week educational workshop which will cover topics ranging from asset allocation, money management, interpreting potential in stocks, IRAs, 401Ks, mutual funds, annuities and the financial planning process. Join us on four consecutive Saturdays, March 13-April 10 (skipping April 3), from 10:00-11:30 AM. This series will be presented by Jerry Starr, Vice-President/Investments of The HBS Group and Accredited Wealth Management Advisor. There is no charge, but registration is required.
 
TOILET TRAINING
Being toilet trained is an important developmental milestone. Join Dr. Greg Hoyson of Bellevue Pediatrics on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 PM for a discussion of suggested guidelines on when to start and what to try. An approach for a less than willing child will be discussed, and there will be ample time for questions. Registration is required.

Buying a home is a big deal! Learn the process and pitfalls before you purchase. You’ll worry less, make better decisions and enjoy your home search more. Join realtor Don Fritsch on Wednesday, March 3rd at 7:00 PM for this introductory home buying seminar. Registration is required.
 
SPRING STORY TIME REGISTRATION
Spring story time registration will begin on Monday, March 1 for residents of Richland and Pine townships. Registration will begin on Monday, March 8 for all other patrons.

FICTION CRITIQUE GROUP
If you’re a writer ready for publication and just need some good input from your peers to polish your fiction, we’re the group for you. The Northern Tier Fiction Critique Group is looking for a few good writers to join us at our twice-monthly meetings. We critique novels and short stories with an eye toward helping local writers achieve publication. The group will meet at the library on Monday, March 8th at 6:30 PM. If you’re interested, call Kelly at 412-445-4878.
 
EXPLORITAS: ELDERHOSTEL TRAVEL
 Pauline and Jim Parker, Exploritas Ambassadors, will discuss “Exploritas” on Wednesday, March 17th at 7:00 PM. Exploritas is a new name for the programs developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning and educational travel since 1975. These programs are designed to empower adults to explore the world’s places, peoples, cultures, and ideas, and in doing so discover more about themselves.
Jim and Pauline will talk about the Exploritas program, then share highlights from some of their own Exploritas experiences: Death Valley, New Zealand, Australia, New York City, Chile, Argentina, Southwest France, Scotland, England, Colorado River and Lake Powell.

COOKING AND DINING WITH PENNY LAWRENCE
Join us for our new, exciting menus designed to spice up our everyday cooking and entertaining. Each class is 2 ½ hours, which includes time to enjoy our food and make new friends. Please arrive promptly for each class – we have lots of delicious cooking and eating to fit in our time. An appropriate beverage will be served with each menu.
 
Simple, Delicious Big Easy Dining - $35

New Orleans has the well-deserved reputation for fabulous food. Relaxed, friendly people, coupled with everyone eating out  - from joints to fine dining - it is all good! This menu is easy, quick to make and creates a party atmosphere – but definitely is not diet food.
 
·         Fresh Crab Empanadas with Avocado Salsa
(Puff pastry wraps a smooth filling, made ahead to bake and enjoy)
 
·         Fresh Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo with Rice
(Mildly spicy, rich full flavor of vegetables, herbs, spices, broth – plus fresh seafood and sausage. You can always add hot sauce!)
 
·         Crunchy Crisp Greens with Creamy Parmesan Dressing
(A cool complement to the gumbo)
 
·         Loaded Garlic French Bread
(Hot, crusty and addictive!)

(Quick to prepare – layers of chocolate, coconut, and pecans – served with whipped cream and chocolate)

Each class will be limited to 20 students, so sign up early. If you register in advance for all three classes, you will receive the discounted price of $95.  Registrations can be taken by phone, mail or in person. Credit cards are accepted.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
The Northern Tier Library’s book discussion group meets on the last Thursday of each month to discuss various works of fiction and non-fiction. On March 25th, the group will meet at 10:00 AM to discuss A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Discussions are informal and open to the public. Please join us!
 
KNIT LIT
Crafters of all kinds are invited to join our group on Tuesday, March 23rd at 7:15 PM. If you have ever wanted to learn to knit or crochet, this is the group for you! Bring along your latest project, and a copy of your latest read for discussion. In March, the group will meet on the library’s upper level – and the meeting will start 15 minutes later than usual.
 
COMPUTER CLASSES
Introduction to Computers – Monday, March 8th, 12:00-2:00 PM
Do you know how to use a mouse? Do you know where the Enter key is? What about the different parts of the computer? If you are unsure about any of these questions, this class is for you! Learn the basics of a computer, mouse and keyboard as a prerequisite for all our other computers classes. NOTE: This class is designed for those who have little or no computer experience. Registration is required.
 
Introduction to Windows – Monday, March 15th, 12:00-2:00 PM
Is navigating your computer’s desktop like traveling in a foreign country?   Are you uncomfortable using drop down menus, radial buttons, and scroll bars? For information and practice with these and other elements of an MS Windows environment, join us for this class. Registration is required.
 
Introduction to PowerPoint – Monday March 22nd, 12:00-2:00 PM
Want to impress your boss with a great presentation? Learn how to create slides with text and pictures, as well as other special techniques to make your next presentation a hit. Registration is required.
 
CLASSIC MOVIES
Adapted from the novel by Dashiell Hammett, The Thin Man features William Powell and Myrna Loy as the delightfully witty Nick and Nora Charles. Join us on Thursday, March 25th, 2:00-4:00 PM, for the film that captured four Academy Award nominations and spawned five sequels.
